Sustainable development of electricity
- (1) Human-induced global climate change is a major concern facing humanity in the 21st century. Developed and developing countries must bear equal but differentiated responsibilities to stabilize greenhouse gases concentration in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous interference with the climate system Innovative technologies must be developed and adopted. Latest developments in low-carbon electricity solutions including clean coal, renewable generation and smart grid, will be reviewed in this presentation. (2) Presently researches in networked surveillance system grow continuously and substantially. One reason is because of the insecurity incidents in many countries around the world. This results in the need of intelligent surveillance and monitoring system consisting of real-time image capture, transmission, processing, and surveillance information understanding. This information will be vital to people safety and indeed national security. Video Information Processing and Analysis for Surveillance System is a pilot project to realize such intelligent surveillance system developed by Thai researchers. The developed system consists of 6 parts, namely, super-resolution image reconstruction, suspect detection, suspect tracking, suspect appearance extraction, suspect activity analysis and level of awareness decision. The output information from the proposed system is suspect features, suspect activity pattern and direction, and level of suspicious incident. This would be very useful for the users to further analyze this information to use in practical surveillance system. The trends in future video analysis for surveillance applications will also be discussed. (3) Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) manipulation of single atoms and molecules on surfaces allow construction of novel quantum structures on an atom-byatom basis and demonstration of single molecule switches on a one molecule at-a-time basis. STM is not only an instrument used to 'see' individual atoms by means of imaging, but also a tool used to 'touch' and 'take' atoms/molecules or to 'hear' their vibration by manipulations. Therefore, STM can be considered as the 'eyes', 'hands' and 'ears' of the scientists connecting our macroscopic world to the exciting atomic and nanoscopic world. In our research projects, we combine a variety of STM manipulation schemes with tunneling spectroscopy techniques to investigate properties specific to the type of atoms/molecules on surfaces. These innovative experiments are tailored to address several critical issues covering both fundamental understanding, and demonstration of novel atom/molecule based nano-devices, This talk will focus on the latest advances in STM manipulation techniques as well as their applications in the nanoscience and nanotechnology area. The presentation will include atom-by-atom construction of artificial quantum structures, and single molecule switches and devices for nanoelectronics and nanoscale memory applications. (4) Field of Biometrics helps in identifying individuals by using their biological characteristics. This field can be broadly classified into physiological Biometrics and Behavioral Biometrics. Both classifications are a part of 'Genetics'. Prime identification System includes Finger Prints, Iris etc. This tutorial focus a personal identification system based on genetic traits. By using the general genetic traits e.g. Blood Group, Ability to Roll Tongue, Ear Lobe Condition, Eye Color, Hair Formed, Color of Hair, Widow's Peak, etc. the population groups can be further refined. By using these traits a "Genetic Identity Card" can also be produced holding Barcode or Radio-frequency identification (RFID) that actually helps identification which may be used for many other purposes at national and international levels including terrorism, identification of immigrant, rural to urban movement etc.
